Joshua Cayer, bass player and front man of Longhouse, was anxiously glued to his TV as the nominees for the 47th annual Juno Awards were announced last month.
Cayer and his bandmates, Marc Casey and Mike Haché, were nominated for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year for their sophomore album II: Vanishing. This is the first time the Ottawa-based band has been recognized at the annual music celebration.
"I broke the news to my bandmates," recalls Cayer. "We were so honoured to be recognized alongside other extremely talented artists, some of whom we are fans of and look up to."
Cayer, an Anti-Money Laundering Investigator and an active member of The Indigenous Circle at TD, says he is proud to showcase metal as another medium for Indigenous artists to flourish, share stories, culture, and experiences.
“My family's community is Kitigan Zibi, outside of Maniwaki, QC, however I grew up in the city, mostly detached from my culture," he says. "When I became a father, I felt a sense of responsibility to immerse myself in the stories, wisdom, strength of our Elders, knowledge keepers and story tellers, so I could pass it down to my daughters. It evoked powerful emotions and influenced the overall theme and lyrics of this album."
As a young Indigenous person growing up in the city, Cayer struggled to fit in and often felt isolated. Within the metal community, he found a sense of belonging.
"Music has a way of transcending all of the barriers and categories that can often divide us, it is almost unexplainable and you have to experience it for yourself," he says.
When asked about the band's reaction to being recognized, Cayer says the opportunity happens "once-in-a-lifetime."
"We want to try and take in all of the experiences that go along with the nomination and celebration."
